This is one of the first lesbian flags, first used in 1999. Fly it high with pride!
Did you know:
- This flag was created by Sean Campbell, a gay graphic designer and first published in 2000 in the Palm Springs edition of the Gay and Lesbian Times Pride issue.
The colours represent...
- The black inverted triangle refers back to when Nazis captured homosexual women and labelled them with black triangles for being “asocial”.
- The violet background was associated with lesbians due to the poetry of Sappho; the poet described her lover as wearing a garland of violets, making violets a lesbian symbol.
- The labrys represents the strength and feminism of lesbian women, being adopted by the lesbian community in the 1970s. The labrys is also featured within Greek and Roman mythology and was frequently seen in depictions of women warriors like Amazons, who are seen as a symbol of feminism.
